KOTO

( Pterygota spp)

 

 1. Origin                                  Ivory Coast.    Ghana.      Nigeria

 

 2. Description:                  Creamy white with Greyish tint. Grain interlocked with

                                                     occasional small knot clusters. Moderately coarse timber.

                                                     Quartered timber reveals striking  figure.

3. Uses                                Substitute for Ramin or Beech. Used for internal joinery, 

                                                     carpentry and  general utility for interior work, boxes and

                                                     crates. Manufactured into veneers.

 

4. Working  

      Properties         ( various authorities comments)

 

                                                    * Works well with standard machine tools provided that

                                                        cutters are kept sharp

 

                                                    * Requires grain filler to provide a good finish.

 

                                                    *  Tends to split when nailed near edges.

 

                                                    *  Glues satisfactorily.

 

                                                    *  Perishable, liable to attack by Lycted beetle and Powder

                                                       Post beetle. Requires preservatives treatment
