Afrormosia

Significant resemblance to Teak in terms of its strength, durability, workability, and 

appearance.

Amoora

Very affordable medium density hardwood timber; ideally suited for all types of 

stairwork.

Ash, Victorian

Very versatile, widely utilized eucalypt timber adaptable for a broad range of 

applications including stair treads, general joinery, furniture production, and flooring 

boards.

Box, Northern/ (Pelawan)

Very hard and very heavy Asian species ( related to the Australian Brushbox). Uses 

include all heavy constructional work, boat framing, marine construction, heavy duty 

flooring, stair treads, etc.

 Durian

The well-known fruit tree from South-East Asia and the Pacific Islands whose timber 

is sought after for light construction work, furniture making, flooring, stair treads, 

door and window frames. Texture medium to coarse; not durable without treatment.

Fijian Kauri/ Malaysian       (Damar Minyak) /Island Kauri

Renowned for stability and flexibility. Easily worked; produces a lustrous finish when 

planed.

Iroko

Well regarded for its strength, durability, and stability. Suitable for many of the 

purposes for which Teak is employed

Gum, Red

Possesses excellent strength properties; very durable with a naturally high 

resistance to termites. Ideal for constructions that remain in water or in damp soil conditions for  extended periods of time.

Eastern Mahogany

Highly prized and attractive Asian species; sturdy and heavy; uses include  high-class

Melunak

Considered to be suitable alternative to Australian Blackwood. Appropriate for stair 

treads, posts, furniture making, boat construction, interior fittings, etc.

Meranti

Popular utility-type timber adaptable for a wide variety of uses, including furniture 

manufacturing, interior finishing, panelling, mouldings, skirtings, stair treads, etc. [Pink / Light Red; 385 kg/m3 ( 24 lbs/ ft3 )]

Merbau

Hard, heavy, and durable species; highly resistant to decay when exposed to weather 

in well-drained areas. Suitable for framing, decking, general construction, and 

staircases.

  Pine, Parana

Possesses fine and uniform texture; straight grained; one of the few woods that are 

not acidic--- at times it can give an alkaline reaction; pink knots common in some boards.

Seraya, Heavy

Light weight hardwood with moderately coarse texture. Used for medium construction 

under cover, as well as panelling, partitioning, utility furniture manufacturing, stair 

treads, etc.

[Light Golden Brown; can darken to Deep Brown upon exposure; 640-770 kg/m3 

(40 - 48 lbs/ft3)]

Terminalia

Moderately hard and heavy timber; easy to work; ideally suited for interior purposes, 

including staircases, furniture manufacturing, panelling, and skirting.
