MERANTI (Sound and Better Grade)

1. Origin                                      South  East  Asia.  South West Pacifi 

2.Description:                     The colour varies from  very pale Pink light Red

                                                       Brown. The grain is is interlocked  and wavy and the

                                                       texture  is coarse but even. The is  wood lustrous.

3. Uses                                  Popular for inexpensive joinery and furniture, shelving,

                                                      light structural work, cabin fitting and fancy ornament

                                                      boxes, stairs in heavier thickness.

4. Working

           Properties           ( various authorities comments)  

                                                    *  Work well with hand and machine tools.

                                                    *  Nails and screws well.

                                                    *  Produces a good finish if wood filler is used.

                                                    *  Suitable only for use under cover.

                                                    *  Turns well.

                                                    *  Many timbers are called "Meranti" and there is much

                                                        variation between the various Shorea species
