ELM- AMERICAN RED

 

(Ulmus Rubra)

 

1. Origin                          U.S.A Canada .

2. Description:                Characteristic appearance with prominent growth ring

                                                  figure. Brown dull Red/ almost Cinnamon in colour. 

                                                  Grain is prominent and irregular.

3. Uses                             Used for bent work where the wood is permanently wet,

                                                  fishing boats dock work and piling.( The Rialto in Venice is

                                                  said to stand on Elm piles ). A traditional wood for coffins,

                                                  weatherboards and the seats of Windsor chairs. Good

                                                  turning timber. Also used for butchers chopping boards 

                                                  ( as it resists splitting )

                                               *  Good for bent work

 

                                               *   Elm is amazingly durable and has a long life in wet

                                                   conditions 

                                                   (Short lengths bored out and used as drain pipes have 

                                                   been dug up in sound condition after centuries of use.)
