ELM- AMERICAN GREY

(Ulmus Americana)

1 Origin                               U.S.A Canada .

2. Description:                    Generally resembles English Elm but coarser in texture and

                                             lighter in weight. Its tough texture makes it good bending

                                             species. Grain interlocked and  streaked with colour

3. Uses                                Good furniture and cabinet wood despite machining difficulties.

                                            Good timber for bent chair parts ( steam bent). Its lack of taste

                                            and smell makes it suitable for barrels, food containers and

                                             baskets.

 

4. Working 

       Properties               ( various authorities comments)

 

                                                 *  Good for bent work

 

                                                 *  Toughness makes it popular for wagon work ( particularly

                                                     the hubs and  wheels)

 

                                                 *  Back sawn boards are pleasing in appearance but difficult

                                                    to polish and  filler is required.
