RED CEDAR

( Also called Kalantis, Caltantas, Wangi, Surian )

( Toona Calantas, Cedrella spp)

1. Origin                          South East Asia.   The Pacific Islands.

2. Description:                    Light weight hard wood (member of the Mahogany spp " Meliaceae " ) 

                                                 with special qualities of durability, stability and beauty. Varies from 

                                                 Light Red to Dark Red. Straight to  interlocked  grain with                    

                                                 moderately coarse texture.

3. Uses                            Joinery, furniture making, carving, piano cases, cigar boxes, paddles, light

                                                 oars, boat ship interiors ( Many of our forebears crafted wardrobes and

                                                clothes chests out of Cedar. The aromatic smell of which appears to repel

                                                moths and silverfish)

4. Working

        Properties              ( various authorities comments)  

                                                          *  Works well with hand and machine tools.

                                                          *  Inclined to be " woolly " and very sharp edges are

                                                                            necessary .

                                                                        *  Moderately strong and has medium steam bending

                                                                            qualities.

                                                                        *  Finishing( which may require filling) can be completed to a

                                                                           smooth and lustrous finish.
