WHITE BEECH

 (Gmelina spp)

 

1. Origin                     North Queensland. New Guinea .  Solomons .Fiji  

2. Description:            Large tree (40m) with straight slender trunk (1.5m diameter).

                                           Pale Straw to light Grey Brown. Firm grained, slightly greasy.

                                           No pronounced figure.

3. Uses                       Furniture, joinery, carving, turnery, picture framing, boat

                                          building, ( decking and planking), pattern making, draftsman's

                                          implements, Venetian blind slats and  beehives.

   Properties       ( various authorities comments)

 

                                                  *   Soft ( rated 5 on 6 class scale)  

 

                                                  *   Machines well due to its slightly greasy nature.  

 

                                                  *   Non corrosive fittings and fastenings should be used 

                                                     (due to acidity).  

 

                                                  *   Can be glued using standard procedures.  

 

                                                   *   Will readily accept stain, polish and paint.
