ABOUT AUSTRALIAN FURNITURE TIMBERS

1-      SOURCES OF TIMBER

Without attempting to exhaustively list every specie or its point of supply we can accurately claim to hold stocks from Europe, Africa, Asia, The Pacific, North & South America and every State of Australia.

Most of our imported species are supplied from  providers who secure timber from  sustainable or managed resources.

2-      TYPES OF SPECIES

AFT stocks Mahogany, Rosewood, Walnut, Oak, Cherry, Ash and many types of fine furniture timbers. Uses range from fine carving timbers ( such as Huon Pine and Jelutong) to heavy duty and durable ( in ground) types like Merbau  We also stock the worlds finest cabinet timbers.

We have attempted to source timber in those specifications which are likely to be required and in a range of colours from  silver/  white through to red brown chocolate and black. We have light easy to work species and others that are so hard and durable that  the product which they produce will  outlast present generations.

The index to this site allow you to read much more about everything that we stock.

3-      PURCHASE

Our office staff will advise you about  the availability of the species and sizes about which you enquire. We can quote on a lineal meter rate, a super foot rate or a cubic meter rate as  desired, provided that we have the end section of the species required.

If a customer wishes to make a consistent  wide board selection from any parcel  then a premium of 25% generally applies. This is because the specification which remains is significantly inferior to that which previously did exist.

Similarly, for a customer wishing to make a significant selection from a parcel of particular colour  or character, a 25% surcharge also applies.

We do deliver within the Metropolitan area.

Delivery outside the Metropolitan area can be arranged with our sales staff. We do not deliver to the country but can deliver to the depot of your chosen transport agency at a fee to be arranged at the time of purchase .The contract with the transport agency will be yours. We can also deliver to V-Line Rail Freight  on the same basis  as above.

7-      WHAT IS IN STOCK TODAY?

The timbers listed in the  Index are those usually stocked. Of course it is never possible to precisely anticipate purchase and supply levels and it is quite predicable  that we may not have the exact size or specie that you want at any given time. That does not mean that we will not have something similar or an alternative specie which might offer other advantages.

The timbers listed in the index have all been popular over the past 10 years and we attempt to maintain supply. For various reasons, supply can be unpredictable. At times, rising prices also makes supply of some species an unwelcome inclusion in our stock list.

To discover the origin, colour character, working qualities and uses of what we stock “click” any name in the index.

Photographs of most species accompany species data in the 'Products section' of our web site.

8-      OFFICE  DISPLAY.

On our Port Melbourne Office we have a display of several hundred items ( cupboard doors, legs, jewellery box, bowls vases etc) which show these timbers to best effect. These are available for you to view during office hours( see office hours details)
